Bookkeeping

No business can reach its potential without a solid foundation in bookkeeping and financial management. Praxis B&E offers the following services to ensure your financial house is in order:

Full Service Bookkeeping: for small businesses, non-profits, and sole proprietors. This includes maintaining the general ledger and chart of accounts, issuing invoices, collecting payments, payroll, financial reporting (balance sheet, income statement, cash-flow statements), inventory tracking, depreciation calculations, and other common functions.

Financial Report Analysis: to assess current financial performance and improve profitability in both the short and long term.

Assessment and Improvement: of existing bookkeeping and record retention systems that may be lacking or convoluted to maximize performance moving forward (“cleaning house”)

QuickBooks Online Training: With well over two times the usership of its closest competitor, Intuit QuickBooks Online is by far the most popular bookkeeping software in the country. For this reason, Praxis B&E uses QuickBooks Online for all bookkeeping and financial reporting functions. We are willing to provide basic training for QB Online for those who have never used it

In accord with our commitment to providing clients with unmatched flexibility, we work with you to discuss work cycles. The bulk of bookkeeping work is generally done on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, and annual basis; but we will remain available during all business hours and can provide ad hoc reports and information as needed. We also can schedule a virtual meeting using Zoom or Google Meet if you want to discuss something face-to-face.

Most importantly, Praxis B&E wants to design a bookkeeping system tailored to your needs. After the initial consultation, we will be able to implement this plan.

Editing

Editing 101

A wise person once said that writing is 10% writing and 90% editing. Any composition – whether a short essay or sci-fi trilogy – requires significant editing to be most effective (truly, for longer works the split might be higher. Some novelists and screenwriters write well over a dozen drafts before clicking save for the last time).  But not all edits are alike. In fact, the editing process is comprised of four categories:

Developmental: Usually performed before writing begins, this is the process of cultivating an idea into a more concrete blueprint. We might develop a detailed outline, determine a rough word count estimate (publishers have strict guidelines for various reasons), or discuss themes you want to explore. Writing a non-fiction book without a robust outline is highly discouraged, but developmental editing of a novel or short story could happen after the rough draft has been completed. In this instance, we would address the same concepts and develop a plan for modifying the narrative to achieve more focus.

Content: This is a more detailed analysis of a complete draft. We will address topics such as tone, narrative structure, character development, and story logic. A content edit will let you know if your are on the right track and which general areas need most improvement.

Line: The heavy lifting in the editing process. We will analyze – as the name implies – every paragraph of your manuscript line-by-line and assess strengths and weaknesses at the most granular level. The goal is to determine if every word on the page successfully contributes to your vision. Dialogue, sentence structure, voice, and word choice are only some of the many things addressed in a line edit. (It is important to note that this step in the editing process is pointless if the overall structure of your work is ineffective. A thorough content edit is almost always needed before getting this far into the weeds).

Copy/proofreading: This stage is often separated into two categories. But the aim of each is to polish your manuscript into a complete work. Grammar, syntax, misspellings, and awkward word choice are addressed in this stage. We will work hard to make sure your final product is error-free.

We also can work with college students who struggle writing essays or term papers. If you need help developing an outline for an essay or want a thorough analysis of a complete draft, we’ve got you covered!
